A television adaptation of the novel was first announced in 2018 by author Laura Esquivel, who at the time said her entire trilogy would be adapted for Netflix, though the project ultimately materialized differently.

In 2023, actress Salma Hayek announced that she would produce a new adaptation of the novel for HBO Max.

Filming took place in Puebla, Tlaxcala and Mexico City between 2023 and 2024, under directors Julián de Tavira and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos.

The screenplay adaptation was written by Curro Royo along with writers María Jaén and Jimena Gallardo, while the second season's writing was handled by Silvia Ortega Vettoretti and Luis Javier Sánchez.

The series premiered on November 3, 2024 on HBO Max with 10 weekly episodes, released in 190 countries with subtitles in 18 languages.

Following its success, the series was renewed for a second and final season, announced on December 5, 2024, which premiered on February 15, 2026.

Critics such as Variety's Aramide Tinubu praised the performances of Azul Guaita and Andrés Baida and noted the series distinguished itself from the 1992 film, while Los Angeles Times' Sergio Burstein highlighted its depiction of women's oppression in early 20th-century Mexico.

Author Laura Esquivel publicly expressed disappointment with the series during the Coyoacán Book Fair in March 2025, saying it did not convey what she had written in her novel, although she thanked the production team and praised the actors' work.
