The fictional county of Westershire, where the series is set, is based on Berkshire in southern England, with scenes in the fictional town of Middleton often filmed in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

The exterior of the 'Pie in the Sky' restaurant was filmed outside number 64 High Street in the Old Town in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, which was originally a florist and then a toy shop before becoming a minor tourist attraction during the show's run.

All interior filming of the restaurant took place at Bray Studios at Water Oakley, near Windsor in Berkshire.

A nearby real restaurant at 80 High Street in Hemel Hempstead renamed itself 'Pie in the Sky' to capitalise on the show's popularity, before later becoming 'Les Amants'.

A successful restaurant in Olinda, Victoria, Australia, called 'Pie in the Sky' serves many of the TV series' recipes, especially its famous crusty steak and kidney pies.

The local newspaper used in the series, the Maidenhead Advertiser, occasionally appears redubbed as the 'Barstock and Middleton Advertiser'.

In series 5, the restaurant set underwent a redesign, changing from a light décor to a darker terracotta scheme, with the bar area moved from beside the kitchen doors to the right-hand window bay.

Filming locations for individual episodes spanned numerous real sites across Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Somerset, including Shirburn Castle, Brocket Hall, Windsor Racecourse, Oakley Court, and the city of Bath.
