The show's music was scored by singer-songwriter duo Wendy and Lisa, and Eric Rigler's pipes and whistles can be heard in most episodes.

In the first season, only Jill Hennessy appeared during the opening credits, set to Eric Rigler's arrangement of the traditional Irish tune 'The Boys on the Hilltop'; from season two onward, the whole cast was shown with a more rock-like theme replacing the Irish sound.

Crossing Jordan shares a fictional universe with NBC's Las Vegas: in the season-four episode 'What Happens in Vegas Dies in Boston,' Woody meets Sam Marquez, leading to crossovers where Jerry O'Connell appeared in five episodes of Las Vegas and Vanessa Marcil appeared as Sam in two Crossing Jordan episodes.

The show went on hiatus for most of the 2003–2004 season to accommodate Jill Hennessy's real-life pregnancy, returning with a shortened 13-episode season.

Because that shortened season aired out of order, the season-two finale's cliffhanger was actually broadcast as the season's last episode instead of the first; the true first episode instead featured an unrelated story with a comedic subplot paying homage to Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 film Rear Window.

The show's sixth-season finale was promoted as a cliffhanger in which the main characters would be left stranded on a mountain with no resolution, but after NBC canceled the series, producers aired a different ending with the characters rescued, fueling rumors that two alternate endings had been filmed depending on renewal.

Because Crossing Jordan relied heavily on pop music in its soundtrack, NBC had to secure music rights before releasing it on DVD, announcing progress on this in January 2007, with the first season finally released on DVD in May 2008.
