Too Much was created by real-life married couple Lena Dunham and Luis Felber, who both served as executive producers, with Dunham directing the series and Felber composing the original music.

Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe were confirmed in the lead roles in December 2023, well before the rest of the cast was announced.

Emily Ratajkowski was reported to be in talks for a role in February 2024, before a fuller cast list was revealed the following month.

Filming took place across multiple locations, including Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire in February 2024, Brooklyn, New York City, in June 2024, and various locations in London throughout 2024.

Lena Dunham herself appears in the recurring cast as Nora South, Jessica's older sister, alongside a large ensemble that includes Rhea Perlman, Naomi Watts, Richard E. Grant, Andrew Rannells, and Rita Wilson.

In November 2025, Netflix announced that Too Much would not be renewed for a second season, confirming it as a limited series.

The series received generally favorable reviews, holding a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 82 critics and a Metacritic score of 68 out of 100, though British critic Lucy Mangan of The Guardian was notably harsher, calling it full of clichés.
