Moonflower Murders is an adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's novel of the same name, the second book in the Susan Ryeland series, and serves as a continuation of the Magpie Murders television series due to numerous shared plot elements.

In January 2023, the series was bought by BBC One from BritBox, after which the BBC developed plans to produce it as a sequel series to Magpie Murders.

Author Anthony Horowitz adapted his own novel for the screen, and the six-part series was directed by Rebecca Gatward.

The series is produced by Eleventh Hour Films and made in association with PBS's Masterpiece, for whom the first series (Magpie Murders) had attracted over five million viewers.

Lesley Manville and Timothy McMullan reprised their roles as Susan Ryeland and Atticus Pünd from the previous Magpie Murders series.

Several actors returned in new roles for this series, including Alexandros Logothetis, Daniel Mays, Claire Rushbrook, Conleth Hill, Matthew Beard and Sanjeev Kohli, alongside newcomers Mark Gatiss, Rosalie Craig, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Adrian Rawlins.

Filming took place in 2023 and was completed by December of that year, with locations including Dublin and Crete.

The series premiered in the US on Masterpiece on 15 September 2024, before airing in the UK on BBC One on 16 November 2024.
