Susan has left publishing and is living in Crete with her long-time boyfriend, Andreas. But her idyll is disturbed by the shadow of a murder committed at a British country hotel eight years ago. Alan Conway visited the hotel and wrote a novel based on what happened there. Cecily MacNeil, the young woman who helps run the hotel, read the book and believed the wrong man had been arrested. Now she has disappeared. Can Susan uncover the secret hidden in the book and find Cecily before it is too late?

Origins

Moonflower Murders is an adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's novel of the same name, the second book in the Susan Ryeland series, and serves as a continuation of the Magpie Murders television series due to numerous shared plot elements.

In January 2023, the series was bought by BBC One from BritBox, after which the BBC developed plans to produce it as a sequel series to Magpie Murders.

Several actors returned in new roles for this series, including Alexandros Logothetis, Daniel Mays, Claire Rushbrook, Conleth Hill, Matthew Beard and Sanjeev Kohli, alongside newcomers Mark Gatiss, Rosalie Craig, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Adrian Rawlins.

Filming

Filming took place in 2023 and was completed by December of that year, with locations including Dublin and Crete.

Reception

The series premiered in the US on Masterpiece on 15 September 2024, before airing in the UK on BBC One on 16 November 2024.
