Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Watson is the second CBS series to adapt the Sherlock Holmes stories after Elementary; while the two shows are otherwise unrelated, their creative teams overlap since creator Craig Sweeny previously worked on Elementary.

Origins

The series was announced in October 2022 and was given a straight-to-series order, bypassing the pilot stage.

Casting

Morris Chestnut was attached to executive produce and star as the title character by January 2024, with executive producer Larry Teng directing the first two episodes.

Casting

Robert Carlyle was cast in a recurring role as Sherlock Holmes by July 2025, and is set to appear in roughly eight episodes of the second season.

Casting

Matt Berry voices an auditory hallucination of Holmes in the first season episode 'Teeth Marks', ahead of Robert Carlyle's live-action introduction as Holmes in season 2.

Filming

The series was shot in Vancouver, including at The Bridge Studios and the University of British Columbia campus, even though the show is set in Pittsburgh, where only some exterior scenes were filmed for season 1; no location shooting took place in Pittsburgh at all for season 2.

Trivia

The second season's premiere was moved up from an original January 2026 date to October 13, 2025 because another CBS show, CIA, was delayed.

Reception

The first episode had its worldwide premiere at MIPCOM Cannes on October 20, 2024, months before its actual US broadcast, and the series later premiered on CBS in the US right after the AFC Championship Game.

Reception

Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a 53% approval rating based on 19 critic reviews, while Metacritic assigned a score of 54 out of 100 based on 16 critics, both indicating mixed reviews.
