Motorheads was commissioned by Amazon Prime Video in November 2023 and was created and written by showrunner John A. Norris.

Filming was originally scheduled to begin between July and November 2023, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, eventually starting on March 25, 2024, in Toronto, Canada.

Production took place across several Canadian locations, including Hamilton's Carlisle and Flamborough neighborhoods, downtown Paris (Ontario), a Motopark in Chatsworth, Penman's Dam Park and Bean Park in Brant, and the historic Blackfriars Street Bridge in London, Ontario, before wrapping on July 22, 2024.

Ruben Fleischer was originally set to direct the pilot, but was replaced by Neil Burger in March 2024, who joined as director and executive producer.

Nicolas Cantu, who plays Marcel, was originally cast in a recurring role but was promoted to a main cast member, as confirmed in an April 2025 press release from Amazon MGM Studios.

The cast features real-life father and son actors Ryan Phillippe and Deacon Phillippe, who play brothers Logan and Christian Maddox (the latter appearing in flashbacks).

Despite receiving a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a mixed 58/100 score on Metacritic, Amazon Prime Video canceled the series after just one season on August 29, 2025, though it was reportedly being shopped to other networks.
