The miniseries is adapted from a novel by Harlan Coben, who also serves as executive producer on the show.

Netflix announced in January 2024 that it would be adapting Coben's novel Run Away into a television series.

The full cast, led by James Nesbitt and Alfred Enoch alongside Ruth Jones, Minnie Driver, Ellie de Lange, Ingrid Oliver, Amy Gledhill, Jon Pointing, and Maeve Courtier-Lilley, was announced on 21 January 2025.

Filming took place in England starting in January 2025, with locations including Saddleworth Moor, Greater Manchester, and Liverpool.

The fictional Lanford University's exterior was created by combining footage of the former S. Katharine's College building (now part of Liverpool Hope University) with scenes shot in the University of Manchester's Old Quadrangle.

The score for the first two episodes was composed jointly by David Buckley and Luke Richards, while Luke Richards received sole composer credit for the remaining six episodes.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an 82% approval rating based on 28 critic reviews, with the consensus praising James Nesbitt's committed performance, while Metacritic gave it a more mixed score of 56 out of 100 based on 8 critics.
