Creator Masahiro Totsuka is responsible only for the script and storyboard (name), while Aguri Igarashi draws the work, as Totsuka stated in the afterword of the first volume that he was too busy to draw as well.

According to Totsuka himself, he chose the theme of women's kendo by selecting, from his stock of ideas, something suitable for an artist who drew girls better than he did himself; in fanbooks he also commented that women's kendo was already a theme that had interested him for a long time.

After the start of the spin-off series 'Bamboo Blade B', Totsuka began calling the original work 'BAMBOO BLADE A', explaining that the 'A' came from 'ATOMIC FIRE BLADE', the final strike of the fictional hero within the story.

Several character names are based on real professional kendoka: Toraji Ishida is inspired by kendoka Toshiya Ishida, Miyako Miyazaki by Masahiro Miyazaki, Kirino Chiba by Masashi Chiba, and Dan Eiga by Naoki Eiga — the latter being the only exception in which the physical design also refers to the real kendoka, who, like the character, is not very tall.

As the original manga was still unfinished during anime production, episodes up to 18 followed the original story faithfully, while from episode 19 onwards the plot became entirely original; episode 15 also inserted an original story in the middle of the adaptation.

The opening verse of the ending theme 'STAR RISE', 'I'm calling the Star Rise', sounds in Japanese like the phrase 'anko iri pasuta raisu' (something like 'rice with pasta with sweet bean paste'), which generated repercussion among fans and, according to the team, helped draw attention to the series.

The anime is frequently presented on sales websites, such as Japanese Tower Records, with the slogan of being 'the first genuine kendo anime in 20 years since Rokusanshi no Ken'.

The opening video displayed at the first broadcast was a provisional version with a summary of episode 1; the complete version of the opening was only included on DVDs, never replacing the one shown on TV.
