Beauty in Black is Tyler Perry's first drama series created for a streaming service, developed under a multi-year first-look deal he signed with Netflix in October 2023.

Netflix ordered the series as a 16-episode drama in February 2024, and Tyler Perry serves as creator, director and executive producer.

The full main cast, including leads Taylor Polidore Williams and Crystle Stewart alongside series regulars like Amber Reign Smith, Ricco Ross, Debbi Morgan and Richard Lawson, was announced in April 2024.

Despite mostly negative reviews from critics, including a one-star review from The Guardian calling it a disaster with one-dimensional characters, the show was a major streaming hit.

Beauty in Black debuted as Netflix's fourth-most-watched series with 5.6 million views in its first four days, then rose to No. 1 on Netflix's TV chart the following week with 8.7 million views.

Season 1 Part 1 spent four weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 and reached No. 1 in 28 countries during its second week of release.

The series has been renewed multiple times in quick succession: Season 2 was ordered in March 2025 after Season 1 Part 2 released, Season 3 was announced in December 2025 before Season 2 Part 2 even premiered, and a fourth and final season was confirmed in July 2026.
