The series was created by Brendan Foley and adapts the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with James Duff serving as showrunner. It was officially announced in February 2024 alongside the casting of its three lead actors, David Thewlis, Blu Hunt, and Dougray Scott.

Filming took place in Dublin starting in April 2024, using North Great George's Street for exterior shots, with additional filming occurring in County Wicklow before production wrapped in June 2024.

All eight episodes of the first season were directed by a single director, Bryn Higgins.

Actress Mary O'Driscoll plays dual roles in the series, portraying both Mrs. Halligan, Sherlock's temporary housekeeper, and her twin sister Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock's landlady.

The show's first season became the most-watched season on The CW broadcast network in the US, while also ranking as the second-most watched on The CW streaming app and fourth-most watched on the Max streaming service.

The series received generally positive reviews and holds a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics from outlets like MediaPost, The Hollywood Reporter, and TV Guide especially praising David Thewlis's performance as Sherlock Holmes.

Dougray Scott's portrayal of Professor Moriarty was specifically singled out by The Hollywood Reporter for its 'theatrical physicality,' while RogerEbert.com praised Blu Hunt's performance but criticized the show's writing.

Following its US and UK premiere in April 2025, the series was later sold internationally through Federation International to broadcasters including Sky Italia, Bell Media, RTS, Nova, Disney Entertainment, Tivibu, and TV3 Group, and it began airing in the Netherlands on BBC NL in July 2026.
