The series is based on the novel 'Las muertas' (1977) by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, which in turn was inspired by the real case of the Poquianchis, a Mexican criminal network active between the 1940s and 1960s.

Before this project, director Luis Estrada was contacted by an American company that wanted to produce an English-language version of the novel; Estrada responded that they didn't understand anything, since he didn't know why they would buy the rights to 'the most Mexican telenovela in history' just to make a parody of it.

Following the success of his film '¡Que viva México!' (2023), Netflix offered Luis Estrada the opportunity to direct a more faithful version of Ibargüengoitia's novel.

Estrada decided to develop the story as a series instead of a film, since the format allowed him to cover the plot more completely with more than seven hours of content.

Luis Estrada's father, José Estrada, had previously adapted another work by Ibargüengoitia titled 'Maten al león' for cinema.

This project marked Luis Estrada's debut as a director of an episodic format, in addition to serving as showrunner, screenwriter, and executive producer.

Filming took place between February and July 2024 in locations in San Luis Potosí, Mexico City, Guanajuato, and Veracruz, including the historic center of San Luis Potosí, Mexquitic de Carmona, Armadillo de los Infante, Villa de Reyes, Cerro de San Pedro, Mineral de Pozos, Cerro del Cubilete, and Churubusco Studios.

Numerous renowned Mexican film actors appear in the series in cameos and supporting roles, among them Tony Dalton, Humberto Busto, Tenoch Huerta, Joshua Okamoto, Christian Vázquez, Eligio Meléndez, Raúl Méndez, and Irineo Álvarez.

The original music for the series was composed by Fernando Velázquez.
