The series was originally conceived by Anthony Horowitz in 2020 as a short-form project developed with Blumhouse Television for the streaming platform Quibi.

After Quibi shut down, the project was reimagined and reworked into a six-part limited series, which was then commissioned by MGM+.

Principal photography began in mid-2024, with filming taking place in the Canary Islands, which stood in for the Mexican jungle and desert settings depicted in the show.

Anthony Horowitz serves as the series' creator, writer, and executive producer, with production handled by Eleventh Hour Films alongside co-executive producers Jill Green and Eve Gutierrez.

In May 2024, the BBC joined the project as a co-broadcaster, acquiring UK rights and confirming the series would air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.

Sue Deeks, the BBC's Head of Programme Acquisition, described the series as 'an ingenious, original and suspenseful murder mystery multiplied by nine.'

The series premiered on 2 March 2025 on MGM+ in the United States, while its UK premiere on BBC One followed later on 27 September 2025.
