Beyond the Gates is the first American daytime soap opera to feature a primarily African-American cast since NBC's Generations (1989–1991), and the first new daytime soap to debut on a major American broadcast network since Passions in 1999.

The series was originally titled The Gates before CBS officially ordered it to series in April 2024, and it launched in the time slot formerly occupied by The Talk.

Executive producer Sheila Ducksworth revealed the show was the result of a four-year effort to break new ground in the genre, and in a New York Times feature called it a '30-year passion' project to get made.

Creator and showrunner Michele Val Jean departed The Bold and the Beautiful after 12 years to develop the series, which is produced through a joint venture of CBS Studios, the NAACP, and Procter & Gamble Studios.

All actors cast in series regular roles were required to reside in Atlanta, Georgia, where the show films.

The role of Ted Richardson was recast in March 2025, replacing Maurice Johnson with Keith D. Robinson, marking the serial's first cast recast.

The show has featured multiple crossovers with other CBS soaps, including The Young and the Restless (Bryton James as Devon Winters, and later a larger crossover event with Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden, Michael Mealor, Melissa Ordway, and Susan Walters) and The Bold and the Beautiful (Thorsten Kaye as Ridge Forrester).

Filming takes place at Assembly Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with a crew of over 200 people working on 27 different sets designed by production designer Bruton Jones.

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony and table read-through on October 30, 2024, cast members contributed signed scripts and letters to their future selves, which were placed in a time capsule on set to be opened later.

In its first year of eligibility, Beyond the Gates received fifteen nominations at the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Daytime Drama Series and eight acting nominations.

CBS renewed the series citing strong ratings growth, including a 48% improvement in broadcast viewership over its predecessor's time slot and beating ABC's General Hospital by 7% among viewers aged 25-54.

On January 2, 2026, the first 200 episodes were removed from Paramount+, causing audience backlash; they were restored four days later.
