Amanda Knox herself served as an executive producer on the series, alongside Monica Lewinsky, and the project was originally referred to internally under the titles 'Amanda' and 'Blue Moon' before being renamed The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox when the trailer was released in July 2025.

Margaret Qualley was initially cast to play Amanda Knox and was set to executive produce the series, but she exited in April 2024 due to scheduling conflicts, leading to Grace Van Patten taking over the role in June 2024.

Critics such as Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times and Lucy Mangan of The Guardian both singled out Grace Van Patten's performance for praise, with Mangan noting her ability to convey naivety and emotional turmoil across both English and Italian dialogue.

The series received a nomination for the Maxwell Weinberg Award for Television at the 2026 ICG Publicists Awards.
