The Runarounds is inspired by a real band of the same name, which was formed in 2021 when creator Jonas Pate cast a group of musicians to appear in his Wilmington, North Carolina–set series Outer Banks.

The real band members were selected from more than 5,000 musicians who responded to the casting call for Outer Banks, and they first performed together for Jonas Pate ahead of appearing in the show's third season.

The series features the real band's actual members, William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock and Jesse Golliher, playing the fictional band in the show.

Filming began in August 2024, with locations including Wilmington, North Carolina, the same city used for Outer Banks.

Beyond the series, the band members of The Runarounds have performed live concerts and small venue shows, building a real-world following as an active band outside the TV show.

The Runarounds was canceled by Amazon Prime Video after just one season, with the cancellation announced on April 3, 2026.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 60% approval rating based on 5 critic reviews.
