Wings

Wings is the second spin-off of Cheers, created by Cheers veterans David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, who later went on to create Frasier, another Cheers spin-off.

The character of Helen Chappel was originally written for Peri Gilpin as a woman of Greek heritage, but Gilpin was unable to commit to the role, so the character was rewritten for Crystal Bernard; Gilpin later appeared in a season 3 episode playing a different character and went on to play Roz Doyle on Frasier.

Tony Shalhoub first appeared in season 2 as a one-off waiter character, but so impressed the producers that they signed him as a main cast member starting in season 3, this time as taxi driver Antonio Scarpacci.

Thomas Haden Church left the show after season 6 to star in Fox's Ned and Stacey, later returning for a guest appearance to wrap up his storyline; he declined an invitation to appear in the series finale but was present in the audience during its taping.

Amy Yasbeck's on-screen husband character was played by John Ritter, who was her real-life partner and later husband.

Tyne Daly guest-starred as wealthy socialite Mimsy Borogroves opposite her real-life brother Tim Daly, marking the first time the siblings had co-starred in a production; she received an Emmy nomination for the role.

The recurring character Carlton Blanchard, played by William Hickey, was a nod to the 1927 film Wings, since Hickey was born the same year the film debuted and the name 'Carlton Blanchard' was actually one of the film's characters, originally played by a different actor also named William Hickey.

Several Cheers actors appeared on Wings in character, including Kelsey Grammer (earning an Emmy nomination), Bebe Neuwirth, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, and Kirstie Alley, reflecting that Wings shares a fictional universe with Cheers and Frasier.

In the Frasier episode 'Bla-Z-Boy,' Niles Crane plays the Wings theme song on piano, which is actually Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 20 in A Major, D. 959, IV. Rondo. Allegretto.

A British remake pilot titled 'Wings' was filmed in 1996 for Yorkshire Television, relocating the setting to Jersey in the Channel Islands and reusing much of the original pilot's dialogue and character names; only one episode was made and very little footage survives, making it a possible example of a lost television broadcast.

Matthew Fox made his television acting debut in a guest role as a local student on Wings.
