Ben Miller, who script-edited the series, also directed the first episode and appeared in the show.

Steve Coogan himself plays the recurring character Keanu, an unemployed, homosexual drug addict and squatter who officially changed his name by deed poll to Keanu Reeves.

The theme music is 'House of the King' by the band Focus, which had previously been used as the theme tune to the 1970s science series Don't Ask Me; every episode also ends with an excerpt from Focus's 'Hocus Pocus'.

The show frequently references classic rock songs by bands like Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash, Rush and The Who, including a discussion of Rush's 'The Necromancer' from Caress of Steel, and a mistaken claim by Tommy that 'Spirit of Radio' features on the album Hemispheres when it actually appears on Permanent Waves.

In 2009, NBC announced plans, as part of a two-year deal with Baby Cow Productions, to remake Saxondale for American audiences, though no further news on the project was ever released.

Steve Coogan brought the Saxondale character back for his 2008 UK live tour, and the character's final stage appearance was in the subsequent tour 'Steve Coogan Live - As Alan Partridge And Other Less Successful Characters,' later released on DVD.

In 2013, after the success of the Alan Partridge film Alpha Papa, Coogan told Empire magazine he felt Saxondale could sustain a film, describing the character as someone who could be genuinely funny himself unlike Alan Partridge. In his 2015 autobiography Easily Distracted, he stated he actually preferred Saxondale to Partridge due to the character's greater depth.
