The Paper is a mockumentary spinoff of The Office, following the same fictional documentary crew that filmed at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch twenty years earlier, now focusing on a struggling Toledo, Ohio newspaper.

The series was first announced in January 2024 as an untitled follow-up developed by Greg Daniels, and in March 2024 it was revealed that Michael Koman would co-create it with him.

The show's title, The Paper, was only revealed in June 2024, a month after Peacock officially ordered the series, and the fictional newspaper was later named the Toledo Truth Teller.

Oscar Nunez reprises his role as accountant Oscar Martinez from The Office, joining the cast of The Paper as confirmed in February 2025, having previously worked at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin.

Robert R. Shafer also reprises his Office role as Bob Vance in a guest appearance, linking the two shows further.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, creators of the original British Office on which the American version was based, serve as executive producers on The Paper.

The lead cast, including Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, was announced in April 2024, with other main cast members like Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Ramona Young joining in September 2024 and the rest in October and November 2024.

On Rotten Tomatoes the first season holds an 86% approval rating from 105 critic reviews, while Metacritic gives it a 'generally favorable' weighted score of 66 out of 100 based on 39 critics.
