The Oblongs are not so much dysfunctional as slightly nonfunctional. Living next to a polluted swamp has left them with the occasional missing limb or mysterious growth, but through it all, this close-knit family sticks together.Sometimes literally.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The series is loosely based on characters from Angus Oblong's picture book 'Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children.'

Origins

Warner Bros. won a bidding war for the rights to adapt Angus Oblong's characters into a series, beating out competing bids from Fox and ABC.

Origins

The Oblongs was Mohawk Productions' first venture into animation, and the only animated series produced by Bruce Helford under that banner.

Filming

Animation for the series was handled by AKOM, the South Korean studio also responsible for animating The Simpsons.

Music

The show's theme song was composed and performed by the band They Might Be Giants.

Reception

Only 8 of the 13 produced episodes aired on The WB before cancellation due to low ratings; the remaining five unaired episodes later premiered on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in 2002.

Reception

Because Adult Swim aired the episodes in production order rather than broadcast order, the second produced episode, 'Disfigured Debbie,' had already aired as The WB's mistaken season finale.

Reception

The Oblongs won the 2001 Artios Award for Best Casting for Animated Voiceover – Television, awarded to casting directors Mary V. Buck and Susan Edelman.
