While working on the original Suits, Aaron Korsh conceived an idea for a show about Hollywood dealmakers centered on a former prosecutor-turned-agent, loosely inspired by a real-life agent who once tried to sign Korsh as a client and had previously made his name prosecuting mobsters.

Korsh initially shelved the concept, but revived it after Suits ended and the pandemic gave him unexpected downtime; at that stage the project was known simply as Ted.

After pitching the show twice to NBCUniversal and once to Netflix, Korsh was advised to reimagine the characters as lawyers rather than agents, and he added a criminal law component to broaden the show's scope beyond entertainment law.

The lead character Ted Black was reportedly inspired by real-life CAA agent and former ICM Partners managing director Ted Chervin.

Gabriel Macht returned to the franchise in a recurring capacity as Harvey Specter, and Rick Hoffman later joined to reprise his role as Louis Litt from the original Suits.

The pilot episode was filmed in Vancouver, but production for the rest of the series was subsequently moved to Los Angeles.

John Amos appeared as himself in the series, which turned out to be his final role before his death a few months after filming; the writers incorporated a tribute to him in the episode 'Good Times,' named after the 1970s sitcom he starred in.

The series held a 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 33 critic reviews, with a critics consensus stating it 'dresses like the original article but lacks the acumen to make a case for itself,' and scored 49/100 on Metacritic, indicating 'mixed or average' reviews.

Despite the mixed reception, NBC cancelled Suits LA in May 2025 after just one season.
