The documentary series was directed by Chris Smith, known for Tiger King, with Bill Simmons and Zara Duffy (known for Mission Blue) serving as executive producers.

Production involved extensive research and interviews, compiling over 200 hours of material with McMahon, his family, business associates, wrestling personalities and journalists.

Vince McMahon halted further interviews with the production after allegations of sexual misconduct against him emerged.

One day before the series' release, McMahon publicly denounced it on X, calling it 'deceptive' and claiming it intentionally misled viewers about key events.

Vince McMahon reportedly attempted to buy the rights to Mr. McMahon to prevent its distribution, but Netflix declined and released the series as scheduled.

Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, who appeared in the series, suggested that drawing parallels between McMahon's public persona and political campaigning (including his ties to Donald Trump and Linda McMahon's political career) was a major source of frustration for McMahon after he saw an advance screening.

Meltzer felt the documentary contained no major inaccuracies except in its recounting of the Hulk Hogan vs. André the Giant match at WrestleMania III, and noted it downplayed Bret Hart's creative control over his character, which was key to understanding the Montreal Screwjob controversy.

Meltzer also pointed out the series omitted that Linda McMahon received a tip that steroid supplier George Zahorian was under investigation, leading to Zahorian not being hired as staff doctor, a detail that helped Vince McMahon avoid conviction in the steroid trial.
