The idea for an adaptation first emerged in 2012, when Hungarian-Canadian producer Robert Lantos announced that his company Serendipity Point would join a planned feature film based on Mór Bán's Hunyadi novel series, with an estimated budget of 25-30 million dollars at the time.

After the film project stalled, the story was later turned into a radio play based on the first two books in 2016 and 2018, before the project was revived as a television series in 2021 when Hungary's newly restructured National Film Institute approved production preparation funding.

In the writers' room, once all scriptwriters had written their assigned full episodes, they would swap scripts with each other, continuously revising them through consultation with producers, the broadcaster and the National Film Institute; showrunner Balázs Lengyel said most of the series was based on the eleventh version of the scripts, with one episode reaching a thirteenth rewrite.

Although promoted as a co-production, the series was overwhelmingly Hungarian-financed, receiving at least 15.2 billion forints in direct state support, with a total registered budget of 25.6 billion forints (including a 30% tax rebate), making it one of the most expensive non-English-language European series, surpassing the per-episode budget of Babylon Berlin's final season.

Filming began in July 2022 and took 173 days to shoot the ten episodes, at locations including the Fót film studio, Hunyadi Castle (Vajdahunyad), Páty, and Kisoroszi, involving more than 600 actors and stunt performers.

Lead actor Gellért Kádár L. learned to ride horses and began training in martial arts specifically to prepare for his role as János Hunyadi.

For the sake of historical authenticity, the cast speaks a total of nine languages across the series, including Hungarian, German, Turkish, Italian, Czech, Romanian, and Serbian, reflecting the native tongues of the various nobility and characters depicted.

The series premiered to nearly one million viewers in Hungary, making its premiere episode the third most-watched television broadcast of 2025 in the country, and it later became the most-watched series on Netflix Hungary.

In Austria the show drew an average of 383,000 viewers (a 15% audience share, rising to 21% among younger viewers) despite featuring a notably one-sided and negative portrayal of Emperor Frederick III.

The Hungarian broadcaster TV2 was fined after re-airing the first three episodes in an early evening slot with a cut, age-12 version that was found to still violate age-rating regulations.
