The series is a live-action adaptation of the Disney Jr. animated show Vampirina, which itself was adapted from the Vampirina Ballerina book series by Anne Marie Pace. Disney Branded Television ordered the live-action series on November 1, 2024.

The show was originally developed under the title Vampirina before being renamed Vampirina: Teenage Vampire when its September 12, 2025 premiere date was announced on August 12, 2025.

Showrunner Randi Barnes, who developed the series and was an executive producer on the pilot, stepped down from showrunner duties after the pilot, and Dan Cross and David Hoge were brought in to run the rest of the season.

The series featured a crossover episode with Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which premiered on October 24, 2025, with Janice LeAnn Brown reprising her role as Billie the wizard from that show.

The show's theme song, 'S-L-A-Y,' was performed by lead actress Kenzi Richardson and written by Kari Kimmel and Jackson Hoffman, released as the debut single on the series' premiere date.

All 16 episodes of the first season were released on Disney+ on October 15, 2025, with episodes 11 through 16 debuting on the streaming platform before their television premieres on Disney Channel.
