The series originated as a yuri light novel written by Teren Mikami and illustrated by Eku Takeshima, published by Shueisha under its Dash X Bunko imprint starting February 2020, and later spawned a manga adaptation by Musshu that began serialization in May 2020.

Light novel illustrator Eku Takeshima also created the manga series Whisper Me a Love Song, while manga artist Musshu is also known for illustrating Flower and Asura, and light novel author Teren Mikami also wrote the main story for the Love Live! multimedia project Link! Like! Love Live!.

The light novel series placed third in the Next Light Novel Award 2021 and won first place in the award's original work category, while the manga adaptation was nominated for the Next Manga Award in the web manga category in both 2021 and 2022.

Critics reviewing both the manga and anime, including Sean Gaffney and Rebecca Silverman, praised the series' humor and character work but repeatedly expressed discomfort with the character Mai's disregard for Renako's consent in her romantic advances, even as they acknowledged this was intended humorously.

ANN's seasonal preview reviewers gave the anime's first episode mixed reviews, with critics like Caitlin Moore and Christopher Farris praising the animation and color palette while criticizing Mai's pushy characterization, whereas James Beckett gave the most positive review, calling it 'a cute premise for an adorable show.'

After the anime's finale aired on September 23, 2025, a sequel titled There's No Freaking Way I'll Be Your Lover! Unless... ~Next Shine~ was announced the same day; it was first released theatrically on November 21, 2025, before airing on television in five episodes starting January 1, 2026.

The anime's opening theme, 'Muri Muri Evolution,' is performed by Akari Nanawo, while the ending theme, 'Mayocchauwa,' is performed by the group The Dance for Philosophy.
