Following the death of comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños in 2014, rumors emerged that his life would be adapted into a film or series, but his son Roberto Gómez Fernández initially ruled out the idea before reversing his decision in April 2018.

Production was originally planned for 2019 but was postponed multiple times, first due to Televisa dropping the project over scheduling conflicts, and later due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before THR3 Media Group and HBO Max finally moved forward with it in 2023.

The eight-episode series is based on Roberto Gómez Bolaños' 2006 autobiography 'Sin querer, queriendo: Memorias'.

Between 2018 and 2024, several actors were considered to play Roberto Gómez Bolaños, including Gael García Bernal, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lalo España, Reynaldo Rossano and Juan Frese, before Pablo Cruz Guerrero was finally cast in February 2024.

In 2021, actor Lalo España posted a video impersonating Gómez Bolaños and his co-stars in an attempt to convince Roberto Gómez Fernández to cast him as the lead.

Édgar Vivar, who played Señor Barriga and Ñoño in El Chavo del Ocho, not only advised the production on Bolaños' life and behind-the-scenes details but also appeared in the series as director Agustín P. Delgado, the man who gave Bolaños the nickname 'Chespirito'.

María Antonieta de las Nieves, the original La Chilindrina, took part in the production and made a special appearance in the series, while Carlos Villagrán, who played Quico, did not participate.

Florinda Meza, Bolaños' widow, threatened to sue the producers over unauthorized use of information about her and feared she would be portrayed offensively; after failed negotiations, her character was renamed Margarita Ruiz in the series, while Carlos Villagrán's character was renamed Marcos Barragán and director Enrique Segoviano's character was renamed Mariano Casasola due to their falling-out with Bolaños.

The series topped streaming charts across Latin America and became the most successful Latin American production in HBO Max history, ranking among the world's five most-watched streaming titles in its first month.
