Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The show began as an attempt by Mike Lazzo, Khaki Jones, and Andy Merrill to revive Hanna-Barbera's Wacky Races before eventually shifting to focus solely on Space Ghost.

Origins

Due to budget limitations, the series was created by recycling clips from the original 1960s Space Ghost cartoon and reorganizing them on an Avid non-linear editor into a talk-show format, meaning editing took up most of the production time.

Casting

C. Martin Croker, poached from animation studio Designefx, came up with the idea of making Zorak and Moltar Space Ghost's sidekicks and voiced both characters himself.

Casting

A proof-of-concept pilot was made in April 1993 using archival footage of Denzel Washington, with Andy Merrill voicing Space Ghost; the pilot never aired, though an edited version later appeared on DVD with Washington removed.

Casting

A second pilot featured Gary Owens, the original 1960s voice of Space Ghost, interviewing Emma Thompson, but George Lowe was ultimately cast as Space Ghost when the series was officially picked up; Owens later made two brief appearances on the show.

Music

The original theme song 'Hit Single' was composed and performed by free jazz guitarist Sonny Sharrock, who died in May 1994 shortly after the show premiered; as a tribute, the episode 'Sharrock' featured fifteen minutes of unedited music takes he recorded for the show.

Music

An hour-long musical season finale featuring the bands Yo La Tengo and Cornershop was planned for the 1998 season but was never produced.

Reception

Comedian Eric André has said Space Ghost Coast to Coast was a major influence on The Eric Andre Show, and he would rewatch several episodes in a row before shooting; when he asked executive Mike Lazzo about the series, Lazzo surprised him by saying 'Space Ghost is dead to me'.

References

Four boulders discovered on the planet Mars were named after Space Ghost, Zorak, Moltar, and Brak.
