Big Mistakes was picked up by Netflix in May 2025 as part of Dan Levy's overall deal with the streaming service.

The series underwent multiple changes during development: it was originally created by Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott as a starring vehicle for the two of them playing siblings.

Rachel Sennott was ultimately ruled out of starring in the series because her HBO comedy I Love LA was picked up to series.

A casting search following Sennott's departure led to Taylor Ortega being cast in the sister role by early March 2025, while Laurie Metcalf had already joined the cast.

Principal photography for the series began in New Jersey in August 2025.

Dean Holland, one of the executive producers, directed the first two episodes of the series.
