Cyberchase was conceived in 1999 as an educational show designed to show kids that math is everywhere and that everyone can be good at it, following curriculum standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Later seasons of the series shifted emphasis away from mathematics toward science-related content, covering topics like environmentalism, wellness, habitat fragmentation, marine ecology, and indoor air quality.

Gilbert Gottfried voiced the cybird character Digit for the first thirteen seasons before being replaced by Ron Pardo starting with season fourteen.

The voice of Matt is provided by Jacqueline Pillon, a woman voicing a male character, while several other roles like Buzz have been recast multiple times across the show's long run (Len Carlson, then Philip Williams, then Peter Cugno).

The animated segments were produced by PiP Animation Services Inc. since season six, while the live-action 'Cyberchase For Real' segments are produced separately by WNET in and around New York City after the animation is completed.

In the live-action 'Cyberchase For Real' segments, actors Bianca DeGroat and Matthew A. Wilson play characters despite being in their 30s, portraying them in a manner similar to the age of the target audience.

In 2012, 'Oh Noah,' a series of shorts teaching kids to speak Spanish, aired in place of the usual 'For Real' segments on select episodes.

Cyberchase is the sixth longest-running animated series in the United States, behind The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Arthur, and is the second longest-running animated PBS Kids series after Arthur.

The series won a Daytime Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Broadband Program and also won a CINE Golden Eagle award in 2006.
