The series aired in syndication as part of The Marvel Action Hour, pairing Iron Man episodes back-to-back with half-hour episodes of Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk animated series.

The show was backed by a toy line that featured many armor variants, and after the 2008 live-action Iron Man film's release, reruns began airing on the Jetix block on Toon Disney.

Despite lasting only two seasons, the series underwent a massive overhaul between seasons when its production studio changed, resulting in a drastically different premise, tone, and approach that made the two seasons barely recognizable as part of the same show.

The first season's theme music was composed by progressive rock musician Keith Emerson, while the second season introduced a new theme by William Kevin Anderson featuring the repeated refrain 'I am Iron Man!' over imagery of Tony Stark hammering iron plates.

Tony Stark's longer hairstyle in the second season was based on artist Mark Bright's depiction of the character from the late 1980s comics.

Robert Hays and Dorian Harewood reprised their roles as Iron Man and War Machine in a crossover episode of The Incredible Hulk (1996) titled 'Helping Hand, Iron Fist,' and Iron Man and War Machine also made guest appearances in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, including a three-part 'Secret Wars' story.

Although he never spoke, Iron Man made silent cameo appearances in a few Fantastic Four episodes, and later appeared in 'Tolerance is Extinction Part 3' of X-Men '97, where he stands with Captain America at the White House protecting President Robert Kelly from Prime Sentinels.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment released the complete series on Region 1 DVD in the United States on May 4, 2010, timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Iron Man 2 just days later.
