The series developed from Hart's semi-autobiographical BBC Radio 2 comedy 'Miranda Hart's Joke Shop', which aired in August and September 2008 after a television pilot was filmed in early 2008.

Abigail Wilson, who worked for comedians Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, suggested Hart pitch a show to the BBC after seeing her perform in 2003, leading to a read-through of her script with Saunders and BBC executives.

Hart said the show wasn't entirely autobiographical, explaining she developed a stand-up persona based on an exaggerated version of herself for comedic effect.

The set of Miranda's joke shop was previously used as the set of Edina Monsoon's kitchen in Absolutely Fabulous, while Gary's restaurant set was reused from the BBC comedy Grownups.

Outdoor shots for the first series were filmed in Hounslow, West London, while outdoor scenes for the second episode of series three were filmed in Church Street, Kingston upon Thames.

Production of the third series was delayed until autumn 2012 because Hart's involvement with the BBC One drama Call the Midwife took priority.

Singer Gary Barlow appeared as himself in the third series, reportedly getting friendly with Hart's character in an unexpected way.

Each episode's opening and closing style, including the 'You have been watching...' goodbye segment, was inspired by classic Jimmy Perry and David Croft sitcoms like Dad's Army and Hi-de-Hi!, reflecting Hart's love of 1970s comedy shows such as Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

The opening episode of the third series became one of the most watched shows in the UK over the Christmas period, attracting a total audience of over 11.5 million viewers.

An American remake titled Call Me Kat, developed by Jim Parsons with Hart as producer and starring Mayim Bialik, premiered on Fox on 3 January 2021 and was cancelled on 4 May 2023.

A German adaptation called Ruby, starring Anna Böger and co-produced by BBC Studios Germany, was released on ZDFNeo on 13 September 2022.
