The Stevens are a middle-class family living in Sacramento, CA. Husband and father Steve is a successful attorney. Wife and mother Eileen is a state Senator. Their oldest child Donnie ia a high-school sports legend. Ren, an 8th-grader, is just about the perfect daughter. She makes the best grades, she's popular, she does volunteer work and other extracurricular tasks by the score. Her brother Louis, in the 7th grade, is her opposite. He likes to sleep late, he's messy, his grades are not good, he's frequently in detention and he seems to take nothing seriously. But he is serious about finding something of his own that he can do to put himself on a par with the rest of his overachieving family. Though he and Ren occasionally soften their attitudes toward each other, at any given moment the're likely to be fighting like mongoose and cobra.

Origins

The series was originally produced as a pilot called Spivey's Kid Brother before being picked up by Disney Channel and renamed Even Stevens.

Filming

In the episode "A Weak First Week," which reuses the original pilot as flashback footage, Disney had to dub the name "Spivey" as "Stevens," though a background banner in a gym scene still reads "Home of Spivey and the Wild Wombats."

References

The show's theme song features clay animations of Louis and Ren turning their remote controls into lightsabers, an allusion to Star Wars made several years before Disney would acquire the franchise.

Trivia

Although Even Stevens ran for three seasons, its internal timeline only covers two school years, with Louis and his friends staying in 7th grade until partway through the second season.

Casting

Shia LaBeouf and Christy Carlson Romano are the only two actors to appear in all 65 episodes of the series.

Music

The 2002 musical episode "Influenza: The Musical" was directed by Sean McNamara, who had a musical theatre background from high school, and was well received despite network executives initially doubting a musical episode would succeed.

Reception

The success of "Influenza: The Musical" led producers Brookwell and McNamara to bring the musical episode format to their other series That's So Raven, and it also inspired the development of the TV film High School Musical, according to then-president of Disney Channels Worldwide Gary Marsh.

Reception

On July 7, 2007, Disney Channel aired a marathon of eight Even Stevens episodes called "Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Louis" to coincide with the release of Shia LaBeouf's film Transformers.
