Jerry Orbach, reprising his role as Lennie Briscoe from the original Law & Order, died of cancer just over two months before the series premiere, so he only appeared in the first two episodes.

Fred Dalton Thompson played District Attorney Arthur Branch simultaneously as a series regular on both Trial by Jury and the original Law & Order.

Scott Cohen, who played detective Chris Ravell, was initially credited as a guest star in episode 3 before being promoted to the main cast in episode 5, and he did not appear at all in episode 4.

NBC canceled Trial by Jury in May 2005 after just one season, making it the first series in the Law & Order franchise to be canceled.

According to NBC entertainment president Kevin Reilly, the cancellation was largely due to the network's acquisition of Sunday Night Football, which reduced NBC's available entertainment programming nights from six to five, no longer allowing room for four Law & Order shows.

Series creator Dick Wolf said in an October 2005 interview that NBC had assured him the show would return for fall 2005 before 'blindsiding' him with its cancellation.

The show's final episode, 'Eros in the Upper Eighties,' never aired on NBC and only premiered later when Court TV re-ran the entire series.

The sets used for Trial by Jury were reused for another Dick Wolf-produced NBC series, Conviction, which premiered in March 2006 and lasted only one season.

The opening track and some intro sequence elements from Trial by Jury were later reused in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after that series moved to the USA Network.
