The series is based on the 2007 film R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour: Don't Think About It and on two anthology books, The Haunting Hour: Chills in the Dead of Night (2001) and Nightmare Hour (1999).

Of the source material, only 'My Imaginary Friend' from The Haunting Hour anthology was adapted into an episode, while 'Make Me a Witch' was the only story from Nightmare Hour left unused.

Creator R.L. Stine stated via Twitter prior to the show's broadcast that The Haunting Hour: The Series was similar in tone to his earlier series Goosebumps.

The series was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia.

On July 9, 2012, the show was named one of four original Hub series to win the CINE Golden Eagle Award for high quality production and storytelling.

R.L. Stine confirmed via Twitter on December 8, 2014 that Discovery Family had cancelled the show after four seasons.

American actress Debby Ryan wrote, produced, and recorded the song 'Made Of Matches' for the episode 'Wrong Number', in which she also appears as a singer.

A music video for 'Made Of Matches', directed by Neill Fearnley and featuring scenes from the episode, premiered on The Hub on February 4, 2011.
