The series was produced by Marvel Productions in association with Orion Pictures and syndicated by New World Television as part of the Marvel Action Universe programming block.

The show altered the RoboCop universe to be more suitable for younger viewers, replacing bullets with laser weapons and pushing the setting further into science fiction.

The series takes place in an alternate continuity to the film, notably keeping Clarence Boddicker alive despite his death in the movie; he returns to battle RoboCop again in the episode "Menace of the Mind" and appears in the final episode.

Unlike the film, RoboCop has a red light in the middle of his visor that occasionally pans across the whole visor, and he is depicted as faster and more agile than in the movies.

The series changes the creator of the RoboCop Program from Bob Morton (as in the film) to Dr. Tyler, who also acts as one of Murphy's confidants and caregivers alongside Dr. Roosevelt.

The title sequence includes a brief animated depiction of Murphy being gunned down by Clarence Boddicker and his gang.

The budget allocated for what would have been a 13th episode of RoboCop was instead redirected to fund the animated series Pryde of the X-Men.

Ownership of the series passed to Disney in 2001 when Disney acquired Fox Kids Worldwide, which included Marvel Productions, though Amazon MGM Studios currently holds the rights to the RoboCop franchise.
