The Snow Queen

The series was produced to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth, which fell on April 2, 2005.

While based on Andersen's original fairy tale, the adaptation makes several changes: Gerda is portrayed as older, she sets out on her quest of her own clear will, and the Snow Queen herself is depicted as a fundamentally benevolent figure.

The bard Ragi, who accompanies Gerda on her journey, is an original character created for the anime and does not appear in Andersen's original story.

Numerous elements from other Andersen fairy tales are woven into the story, which is largely presented as original anime content framed as being inspired by Andersen's tales.

This was the first TMS Entertainment production to air on NHK in 19 years, the previous one being 'Onegai! Samia Don'.

Although Ayako Kawasumi voiced Gerda, the deuteragonist role second only to the Snow Queen, her name never once appeared in newspaper TV listings; instead names like Masahiro Takashima, Tōru Nakamura, guest celebrities, or even director Osamu Dezaki were listed.

NHK's official stance was that Mayo Suzukaze, who voiced the Snow Queen, was considered the lead actress and thus naturally listed first in cast credits in newspapers and magazines.

The opening theme 'Snow Diamond' was composed and arranged by Akira Senju and features a violin performance by Mariko Senju, while the ending theme 'Daisuki na Kimi ni' was written, composed, and performed by Kazumasa Oda.
