Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

This OVA is the first animated work to bear the Super Robot Wars name, set after the events of the Game Boy Advance game Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 and depicting the original 'Bartoll Incident' story exclusive to the OG series (no licensed mecha from other franchises appear).

Casting

Characters Lamia Loveless and Latooni Subota, who did not have voices in prior games, were given their first voiced appearances in this OVA.

Trivia

Alongside the OVA, Banpresto released a three-volume audio drama CD series called 'The Sound Cinema,' which introduced a new subplot featuring mecha such as the Astelion AX and the Mironga, and included characters like Rioune Zoldark and Ibis Douglas who did not appear in the OVA itself.

References

Events from the OVA and its side stories were later incorporated into the PlayStation 2 game Super Robot Wars OG: Original Generations (released June 28, 2007), which combined Original Generation, Original Generation 2, and new content based on the OVA and drama CDs.

Music

The opening theme 'Meikyū no Prisoner' by JAM Project was later reused in remixed form as 'Meikyū no Prisoner Ver.OG' for the background music of the game Original Generations, since the OVA's story was reflected back into the games.

Reception

A promotional event called 'Super Robot Wars Thanksgiving Festival 2005' was held on February 12, 2005, at Shin-Kiba Studio Coast, where footage from the OVA was unveiled alongside a talk show featuring voice actors Ryotaro Okiayu (Raidiese) and surprise guest Yuko Mizutani (Excellen), plus supervisor Takanobu Terada.

Reception

The series was licensed for English release by Media Blasters in February 2013, after an earlier 2007 release by Bandai Visual USA, and it later premiered on the Toku TV channel in the United States on December 31, 2015.

References

A manga adaptation of the OVA, illustrated by Setanoriyasu, was serialized in Dengeki Hobby Magazine and collected into a single volume.
