The show's title comes from a mental association combining Space Battleship Yamato and Mobile Suit Gundam into 'Kidō Senkan Yamato Nadeshiko', though its actual content was modeled after producer Toshinori Otsuki's favorite show, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Producer Toshinori Otsuki advised director Tatsuo Sato to make the show 'in a sense clichéd, ordinarily maniacal', deliberately steering it in a completely different direction from the similarly-timed Neon Genesis Evangelion, to which it was frequently compared.

The name Nadesico is a play on the phrase 'Yamato nadeshiko', representing the traditional Japanese ideal of femininity, and is also the name of a flower.

A dedicated specialist team was formed just to faithfully recreate the look and feel of 1970s super robot anime for the in-universe show-within-a-show Gekiganger III, which supports the series' themes from the sidelines.

Story editor Noboru Aikawa wrote an initial draft for episodes 25 and 26 that tried to include every conceivable plot element, ballooning to 1.5 to 2 times the normal script length; director Tatsuo Sato then cut most of the mystery explanations, keeping only the resolution between Yurika and Akito.

Series writer Takeshi Shudo later reflected in his web column that if he had been in charge of series composition, he would have made the Nadesico ship itself the true protagonist in an ensemble drama capable of running over 100 episodes, calling the 26-episode length a waste of the concept.

In August 2005, director Tatsuo Sato announced on his official site that planned sequels to both Nadesico and Stellvia had been cancelled and would 'forever' be impossible to realize, though the word 'forever' was retracted the next day after feedback.

One of the Nadesico's crew members, a former voice actress, is a direct parody of real voice actress Megumi Hayashibara.

The in-universe anime Gekiganger III is an homage to and parody of 1970s-80s super robot mecha anime, most notably Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa's Getter Robo.

The show contains numerous self-referential anime parodies, including an episode where the crew holds their own anime convention with a Gekiganger viewing marathon and cosplay, and another that parodies Macross with an in-show Miss Nadesico beauty contest.

The wars between Earth and its colonies referenced throughout the series nod to Gundam, while the crew's collection of oddball characters who choose their own battles rather than take sides is a nod to Captain Harlock.

A trivia connection exists with the Game Boy Color mahjong spin-off Ruriruri Mahjong: fans discovered it could communicate with King Records' unrelated Neon Genesis Evangelion Mahjong game because both used the same underlying system, despite being different titles.

The film sequel won the Animage Grand Prix award in 1998, and in Animage's polls that year Akito was voted ninth favorite male character, Ruri Hoshino second and Yurika eighth favorite female characters, while the TV series was voted third favorite anime of the year.

In 2006, to commemorate the Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival's 10th anniversary, the series was ranked 46th in the animation category of the 'Japan's 100 Media Arts' selection.
