Sensible Andrew and emotive Lauren Stone are happily married. When they decide to embrace the 'joys of parenthood', their lives change and those of her brother Danny and selfish boss (plus her PA), his staff and both their friends sets. And everything is compared to another couple, longer pregnant and sooner parents, Eric and Julie, in 'friendly' rivalry.

Origins

The series is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Risa Green, and was produced by Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, who previously produced Two and a Half Men, for Warner Bros. Television.

References

The title is a parody of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Notes from Underground.

Origins

The show was originally supposed to debut on October 5, 2006 alongside the sitcom Big Day, but ABC made a last-minute schedule change by moving Ugly Betty to Thursday, which bumped both new sitcoms.

Trivia

After multiple scheduling changes, the series finally premiered on Thursday, April 12, 2007, before moving to its regular Wednesday timeslot on April 18.

Casting

Despite playing parents expecting a child throughout the series, the majority of the cast had little real-life experience with pregnancy.

ABC canceled the series on May 13, 2008 after two seasons.

In Russia, all 23 episodes of the series were broadcast on the network NTV.

Reception

Eight episodes never aired in the United States during the show's original run; they only became available when all 23 episodes began streaming on Tubi in late 2025.
