Ghost Hound

Masamune Shirow's original concept for GHOST HOUND was devised in 1987: he wrote a plot draft for Production I.G and presented some setting designs, but production remained interrupted for years.

The series was born as a celebratory project for Production I.G's 20th anniversary and was announced for the first time at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2007.

The production team deliberately sought to create a work different from Ghost in the Shell, Shirow's most famous work, while starting from his original idea.

Director Ryūtarō Nakamura and screenwriter Chiaki J. Konaka had previously collaborated on other works like serial experiments lain, but in this series Konaka adapted the writing to the more youthful tone typical of Nakamura.

In the screenplay, for the structure of the initial plot developments, the television series Twin Peaks was taken as a reference.

In the group of 'Tonoda Sanbagarasu', linked to the character Suzuki Seiichi, an element appears connected to Ghost in the Shell, another work by Masamune Shirow produced by Production I.G.

The fictional term 'bioide', the creatures developed by Nihon Bio-Industries in the series, recalls the concept of 'bioroid' present in other works linked to Masamune Shirow, although the direct relationship between the two is not clarified.

The series features the fictional convenience store chain KMART, a konbini that has no connection with the real K-Mart chain that never existed in Japan with that exact name.
