The TV series is a spin-off of the 2005 film Are We There Yet? and is considered the third and final installment in the franchise, though it takes place in a continuity different from the two films.

Although sharing the title and characters with the original film, the show's storyline is actually more similar to that of the sequel, Are We Done Yet?

Ice Cube, who starred as Nick in the original films, stepped back from the lead role for the series; Terry Crews took over as Nick Kingston-Persons while Ice Cube instead played a recurring character, Suzanne's black-ops brother Terrence.

Every main film character was recast for the show, including Suzanne (played by Nia Long in the films, Essence Atkins in the series), the two children, and Nick's friend Martin (Jay Mohr in the films, Christian Finnegan in the series).

TBS greenlit the series in June 2009 with an initial order of 10 episodes, along with an option to extend the order to as many as 90 episodes.

Unlike most sitcoms, production ran on an unusual schedule that allowed three episodes to be filmed within a single one-week period.

The series was filmed at the Connecticut Film Center in Stamford.
