Comedy

Klovn is a Danish sitcom, which first aired on the Danish TV channel TV2 Zulu. It focuses on the life of the main character Frank and Casper. The show builds its comedy around quiet everyday situations, social awkwardness, uncomfortable silences and general faux pas. Klovn usually gets compared to the American sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm by Larry David. It’s also shot handheld, in a pseudo-realistic style. Some have also mistakenly compared the theme to Curb Your Enthusiasm’s, despite it being a direct reference to Jacques Tati’s Mr. Hulot movies. The poster for the first film can be seen in Casper and Frank’s offices throughout the series. Klovn initially ran 6 seasons on TV2 Zulu from 2005-2009 and was renewed with an additional 3 seasons that aired from 2018-2022.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Klovn was created by Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam and produced by Nutmeg Productions and Zentropa for TV 2, premiering on TV 2 Zulu on 7 February 2005.

Origins

The series ran, with multi-year breaks between seasons, from 2005 until 7 September 2025, totaling 94 episodes of about 25 minutes across ten seasons.

Casting

The main characters are played by Frank Hvam, Casper Christensen, Mia Lyhne, Lars Hjortshøj and Michael Carøe, all portraying fictionalized versions of themselves, alongside real Danish celebrities such as Jan Gintberg, Jarl Friis-Mikkelsen and Lasse Rimmer also playing exaggerated versions of themselves.

Casting

Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier appears as himself in the season 2 episode 'Kgl. hofnar,' alongside Zentropa producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen, and von Trier is also credited as a co-writer on that single episode.

References

Shortly after its 2005 premiere, Danish media accused Klovn of copying the American HBO sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm, pointing to a nearly identical premise of a famous comedian playing himself alongside friends and colleagues who also play semi-fictional versions of themselves.

References

Critics cited specific parallel storylines, such as Frank trying to bribe a cemetery caretaker to move his late mother's grave in 'Farvel igen mor,' which closely mirrors the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode 'The Special Section,' and a hospital scene in '100 dage i Forum' mirroring a similar mix-up in the Curb episode 'Shaq.'

References

It was also noted that Klovn's intro/outro music can be heard in the background of several season 3 episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Trivia

Casper Christensen said in a 2017 interview that lawyers for HBO and Larry David had reviewed the material and found no grounds for a plagiarism claim, adding that only some Danish journalists had made such accusations, calling it unfair.

Reception

Klovn is considered one of the most successful Danish sitcoms and won the Producers' Association's TV Prize for 'Best Comedy of the Year' in 2005, 2006 and 2008, with its cast also receiving multiple nominations.

Trivia

Beyond the TV series, three feature films were produced: Klovn - The Movie (2010), Klovn Forever (2015) and Klovn - The Final (2020).

Effects

The show is filmed in a pseudo-realistic, retroscripted style where dialogue is largely improvised around a scripted outline, making first-time viewers uncertain whether the events are staged or genuinely documentary.
