A multigenerational, working-class family experience life's struggles with faith, love and, most importantly, humor. Curtis, aka 'Pops', the uncle and head of the household, has house and home turned upside down when an unexpected event forces his nephew, CJ, and CJ’s kids to move in, putting three generations under one roof. This chaotic living situation takes its toll on cranky Pops, who is reluctant to have his routine disturbed. In addition to CJ’s family, Pops and Ella’s son, Calvin, a wise-cracking, broke college student, hangs out at home, making it impossible for any peace and quiet. It soon becomes evident just how wide the gap is, as the family tries to find a way to coexist through all of life’s hilarious ups and downs.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Reception

With 254 episodes at the end of its sixth season, House of Payne became the television series with the most episodes among shows with a predominantly African American cast, surpassing The Jeffersons (253 episodes), Family Matters (215 episodes), and The Cosby Show (202 episodes).

Reception

The two premiere episodes on TBS on June 6, 2007 broke a cable record for sitcom airings, drawing 5.2 and 5.8 million viewers, though ratings later declined significantly, dropping to around 2.1-2.3 million viewers by May 2010.

Origins

The series began as a limited run of 10 episodes in mid-2006 on Atlanta's WTBS and nine other broadcast outlets before TBS later ordered 100 additional episodes for national distribution starting in 2007.

Casting

In the original test pilot, Ella and Curtis were written as C.J.'s biological parents and his name was Curtis Jr., but for the televised series the format was changed so that Calvin became their son while C.J. (renamed from Curtis Jr. to Clarence) became their nephew instead.

Casting

Rochelle Aytes originally played the role of Nicole Jamieson (Malik's math teacher) in the 2006 test pilot episodes, but the recurring role was later taken over by Robinne Lee for seasons 1-2.

Casting

Lance Gross's character Calvin Payne was created exclusively for the TBS/BET version of the series and did not exist in the original test pilot format.

Casting

China Anne McClain and Denise Burse were written out of the show at the start of season 5 after McClain landed her own Disney Channel show, A.N.T. Farm; Burse departed for undisclosed reasons. Both later returned in recurring roles starting in season 6.

Filming

Tyler Perry personally directed every episode of the first three seasons, before directing duties in later seasons were shared with actress Kim Fields, her mother Chip Hurd, and producer Roger M. Bobb.
