Young Dracula is loosely based on a 2002 children's book of the same name by Michael Lawrence, and also draws on Bram Stoker's 1897 epistolary novel Dracula.

The first two series were filmed at various locations around Wales, including Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, Caerphilly Castle, Tretower Court and parts of Llantrisant.

The third series relocated filming from Wales to Liverpool in 2011, using locations such as the disused Margaret Bevan School, Croxteth Hall and Stanley Docks; rehearsals began the week of 9 May 2011 followed by a three-month shooting schedule that wrapped in August.

Series four consisted of 13 episodes of roughly 30 minutes each, with filming starting in mid-April 2012 in Liverpool before the first episode aired on 29 October 2012.

Craig Roberts, later known for other roles, played Vlad's human best friend Robin Branaugh in series 1-2.

The character Ingrid Dracula's name may have been inspired by actress Ingrid Pitt, known for her roles in vampire films.

An additional spin-off series called Young Dracula Files began broadcasting on 24 October 2012, featuring the main characters narrating their past stories, hosted primarily by the character Bertrand Du Fortunesa, played by Cesare Taurasi.

Young Dracula won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Children's Drama and the Welsh BAFTA for Best Children's Drama in 2007, and was later nominated for the BAFTA Children's Drama Award in 2008 and for three Royal Television Society North West awards plus a Kids Vote BAFTA in 2012.
