Ballykissangel

The fictional village name Ballykissangel is derived from Ballykissane, a townland near Killorglin in County Kerry, where creator Kieran Prendiville used to holiday with his family as a child.

On the sign outside the post office, the village's Irish name is shown as 'Baile Coisc Aingeal', which translates to 'The town of the fallen angel'.

The show was filmed on location in Avoca and Enniskerry in County Wicklow, Ireland.

Significant cast changes occurred at the end of series 3 with the departure of central characters Peter Clifford and Assumpta Fitzgerald, leading to several new characters being introduced and previously minor characters like Kathleen, Niamh, Frank and Brian being given expanded storylines.

The show explored controversial themes of its era such as divorce, which had only been legalised in Ireland a year before the series began, as well as pre-marital sex and the Catholic Church scandal.

Ratings for the series declined from a peak of ten million viewers to 4.8 million before it was ultimately cancelled in 2001.

The ninth episode of series 3, 'The Waiting Game', was omitted from early Region 2 DVD releases of series 3 and from all Region 4 (Australian) DVD releases, though it was included in the 2010 box set and all Region 1 (North America) releases.

Father Peter Clifford and Assumpta Fitzgerald made a guest appearance in the 1996 Father Ted Christmas special 'A Christmassy Ted', appearing in a dream sequence experienced by Father Ted Crilly.

In 1997, Father Clifford and Assumpta Fitzgerald also guest-starred in a Comic Relief crossover episode of The Vicar of Dibley titled 'Ballykissdibley', featuring lead characters from both shows.
