Emma, a kind-hearted foster kid who can't catch a break, finds out she has an identical twin sister, Sutton, who - unlike Emma - was adopted by wealthy parents and is seemingly living an ideal life. After their initial meeting, Sutton talks Emma into stepping into her life for a few days while she pursues a lead on their birth mother. Initially excited to do this favor for her sister, Emma soon learns that Sutton has gone missing and could be in trouble. Now, Emma must decide whether to come clean to Sutton's family and risk her own safety in the hope of uncovering her twin sister's true whereabouts, along with the truth about why they were separated in the first place.

Origins

The series is loosely based on a book series of the same name by Sara Shepard, who also wrote the Pretty Little Liars novels; the show was greenlit for a pilot in October 2010 based on the then-upcoming novel.

References

The television adaptation diverges significantly from the source books, most notably in that the character Sutton is deceased in the novels but alive and central to the show's storyline.

Casting

Alexandra Chando was cast in November 2010 to play the dual lead role of both twin sisters, Sutton Mercer and Emma Becker.

Casting

Charisma Carpenter, who had a recurring role in season 1 as Rebecca Sewell, was promoted to the main cast for season 2 in July 2012.

Trivia

A season 2 retcon changed the name of Rebecca's ex-husband from Marvin Jenns (as stated in season 1, episode 19) to Marvin Lyle, altering the surname of his son Jordan Lyle.

Reception

The series premiere on August 15, 2011 drew 1.4 million viewers, and the mid-season premiere in January 2012 drew a series-high 1.8 million viewers.

ABC Family took an unusually long time to decide on renewal after season 2, and the cast's contract options lapsed in April 2013 with only Alexandra Chando signing a new option; Chando herself announced the cancellation on Twitter and Instagram before ABC Family officially confirmed it in July 2013.

Reception

A critic for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette compared the show to being a 'lighter, better executed version' of the CW pilot Ringer, which similarly involved a twin premise.
