Central Park West

Central Park West was created and executive produced by Darren Star and was set in the affluent Central Park West area of Manhattan.

The show was CBS's attempt to rebuild after a disastrous 1994-95 season in which the network lost many affiliates due to Fox acquiring NFC football rights, and it aimed to attract younger Generation X viewers while recapturing the network's past nighttime soap glory from the era of Dallas and Knots Landing.

It was CBS's most heavily promoted new show in many years, with a promotional campaign specifically designed to appeal to younger viewers.

Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue was offered a lead role on the series but declined it.

The series was not successful and was pulled from CBS's schedule in November 1995 after only a few months on air.

For its relaunch, the show was retooled to attract older viewers: Mariel Hemingway's character was written out, and Gerald McRaney, Noelle Beck and Raquel Welch joined the cast, while the series was retitled CPW.

The retooled version consisted of eight episodes and aired in June 1996 on Wednesdays and Fridays, but the changes failed to save the show, which was cancelled on June 28, 1996.

The series debuted on September 13, 1995, ranking 61st for the week with 9.7 million viewers and a rating/share of 7.5/12.

The failure of Central Park West pushed CBS to quickly return to its traditional programming focus and repair relations with both new and older affiliate stations frustrated by the network's programming decisions during the Laurence Tisch era, which ended shortly after with Westinghouse's purchase of CBS in 1995.
