The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a 1996 serial adaptation of Anne Brontë's novel of the same name, produced by the BBC. A mysterious young woman arrives at Wildfell Hall, an old house of the Elizabethan era, with a young son. She is determined to lead an independent existence, but her new neighbours do not want to leave her alone. Only one of them, a young farmer, succeeds in finding her secrets.

The BBC hoped the 1996 serial would achieve the same popularity as Pride and Prejudice, which had aired the previous year, and the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth created a special exhibition of costumes from the series to promote a re-evaluation of Anne Brontë.

Despite not matching the commercial success of Pride and Prejudice, the series was broadcast in over twenty countries and generated £317,441 in revenue for the BBC.

Reception

The series won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Make-Up and Hair Design and received multiple nominations including Best Costume Design, Best Design, and Best Photography and Lighting.
