Every script for the Earth series had to be approved by Broderbund, the company that created and owned the Carmen Sandiego franchise at the time, due to concerns about violence levels seen on other Fox children's shows like X-Men and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Broderbund did not impose this same script approval requirement on the creators of the Where in the World and Where in Time PBS game shows, likely due to PBS's long-standing reputation for non-violent educational programming.

The show's theme song uses the melody from the chorus "Singt dem großen Bassa Lieder" ("Sing Songs of the Great Pasha") from Mozart's opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail, adapted with new lyrics, pop instrumentation, and a backbeat.

The series won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Animated Program in 1995.

In 1995 the show was spun off into a Where in the World-styled video game titled Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective, featuring the Earth series' lead characters.

The live-action Player character, always shown from behind, was portrayed by different actors across the seasons: Jeffrey Tucker in season 1, Justin Shenkarow in season 2, and Asi Lang and Joanie Pleasant in seasons 3–4.

Zack's jacket features his name misspelled as "Zak" instead of "Zack."

Shout! Factory and Sony BMG released the first season on DVD in June 2006, but due to poor sales no further seasons were released by them, leading later companies like Mill Creek Entertainment to eventually release the complete series.
