The series was directed at the pilot stage by acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who also served as an executive producer.

CBS ordered three additional episodes on November 14, 2011, expanding the season order from 13 to 16 episodes.

Every episode title begins with the words 'In Case of...', with the exception of the pilot episode.

The show's final three episodes were moved to the Friday 9:00 p.m. timeslot, after the first thirteen aired at 8:00 p.m.

HitFix critic Daniel Fienberg praised the cast and Demme's direction in his early review of the pilot, but questioned whether the show would hold up without Demme's involvement.

The series received a score of 65 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating generally favorable reviews.

Critic Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe compared the show to Grey's Anatomy and suggested it needed to move past the recurring debate over whether the ghost character Anna was real.

CBS canceled the series after just one season, with the cancellation announced on May 10, 2012.
